Ato Samuel Aseffa Hates HR 2003.

Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Ato Sammy Assefa, is a moron has a, shall we say, fluctuant relationship with reality.

HR 2003, the Ethiopia Democracy and Accountability Act of 2007, passed/sailed through the US House of Representatives, a fact that is pushing the Ato Sammy, already not exactly the paragon of coherency, to the very edge of complete incomprehensibility.

Herewith ye shall find his response to the passage of HR 2003… and seriously, it’s… turbo crazy.

Apparently, HR 2003 is “irresponsible legislation.” We know this to be true because the EPRDF, a government being so ably-ineptly represented by this Ambassador, knows a thing or two about passing legislations that are exquisite in their irresponsibility.

But we wonder if Ato Samuel thinks that passage of HR 2003 would-create-fresh-obstacles-to-Ethiopia's-bold-efforts-towards-comprehensive-democratic-reforms, hm?

The U.S. House of Representatives today approved irresponsible legislation that, if it becomes law, would create fresh obstacles to Ethiopia's bold efforts towards comprehensive democratic reforms.

Oh, Sammy.

The action disregards Ethiopia's immense progress in creating a competitive, pluralistic system of government and a more open civil society.

Oh, Sammy.

According to the U.S. State Department, "[t]he [2005] elections stand out as a milestone in creating a new, more competitive multiparty political system in one of Africa's largest and most important countries."

Okay, we understand some EPRDF half-wit public relations wonk probably told the Ambassador to keep throwing in US specific examples in his soft-core retorts—how else to explain Ato Samuel’s unfortunate “farmers in Iowa” disquisition in the FP interview?—but, really, we promise you, Mr. Ambassador, we are not all imbeciles. What good is a “milestone” election if the results are stolen and the opposition herded to jail? How can we put this so that EPRDFfers can understand… it’s like if Prime Minister Meles didn’t appoint the same person to head the supreme court and the election board. What good is an independent judiciary and election board if it can’t be completely controlled? Get it? Good. So can we de-Viagra the whole hard on the EPRDF has for Elections 2005? Whatever credit it might have garnered was completely annihilated by what happened after the elections. Okay. Send out a memo to retool that talking point.

But the good Ambassador leaves the best for the middle:

While many of these democratic gains seem to have gone unnoticed by Members of Congress, the very presence of two recently convicted and pardoned senior opposition leaders who testified at the Congressional hearing today bears witness to the Ethiopian Government's brave resolve to reinvigorate the democratic process.

You see what we mean? You see what we mean?!

In other words, the very presence of Berhanu Nega and (the democracy diva) Bertukan Medeksa at the hearings is proof of the EPRDF’s profile in courage, in that if the EPRDF had not bravely charged these… these… violent economist and lawyer/judge with “attempted genocide” and then imprisoned them for two years and then ran a sham trial and then convicted them and then sought the death penalty and then pardoned them… if the EPRDF had not made their lives miserable and maligned them, they would not be in front of Donald Payne whining about democracy. Only because the EPRDF was brave enough to harass/imprison/pardon these two misfits are they able to bear witness to, um, the Ethiopian Government's brave resolve to reinvigorate the democratic process.

So, you’re welcome, Berhanu and Bertukan!

It is jarring, to say the least, that immediately in the wake of these pardons the U.S. House of Representatives approved punitive measures against Ethiopia.

Jarring, indeed. For Christ’s sake, people, these geeks were pardoned just by the sheer braveness of the EPRDF. They were pardoned. Heloo? What else can the EPRDF do to get some rispek around Capitol Hill? Round up thousands and set up concentration camps? Then free 18,000 of them as a gesture of goodwill in the new millennium? Done. Persecute the free press then free 25 journalists who were charged with “treason”? Done. Install jivey ambassadors to elucidate on such bold moves towards democracy? So-ho done! What else can possibly be done?

[t]he House sadly has allowed itself to be used by extremists in Ethiopian politics who reject peaceful and legal avenues of political participation. The House action serves only to bolster these hard-line elements by encouraging the politics of extremes.

Yeah. So hate-filled are these extremists who pushed for HR 2003 that they… peacefully lobbied a branch of government! They, unlike the EPRDF, don’t have the moxie it takes to gun down unarmed citizens. Oh, House of Representatives, what has become of thee?

Mr. Payne made this clear in a recent press release in which he accused Ethiopia -- against all evidence and common sense -- of being "a source of instability in the region."

Yaaa. No evidence to back the uncommon sense reality that the EPRDF’s invasion of Somalia has created havoc, dare we say... instability in the Horn. There are no random explosions that kill civilians on any given day in Somalia. Somalia is not breaking up into tiny kibble ‘n bits. The biggest market in Somalia is as vibrant as any farmer’s market in, let’s say… Iowa. HRW has not accused the Ethiopian government of committing war crimes in Somalia. In fact, if Mr. Payne wants to see first hand all the non-evidences of just how non-jihadi Somalia has become after EPRDF’s intervention, the Ambassador will be happy to arrange for a peaceful one-way ticket to bright, sunny Mogadishu. He will even throw in the flack jackets.

You might be wondering by now, is absolutely no Samuel Aseffa philippic complete without the obligatory finger-jabbing at the EPRDF’s former guerrilla buddy who now rule s the land called Eritrea?

Wonder no more. Go on, boy. Do your thang.

The fact is that the entire region faces a serious threat from [... three guesses who...]Eritrea -- a country that the U.S. Department of State is considering listing as a state sponsor of terrorism, and that has rejected the core institutions of legal opposition parties and a private press, officially banning both, and also outlawed worship by minority religious denominations.

Forgiving the bad writing in that paragraph, we note with stunned admiration His Excellency’s seasoned peddling of obfuscation. “Officially banning.” Huh? Huh, do you see what we see? At least the opposition is not officially banned in Ethiopia—just imprisoned or under constant unofficial harassment. And the free press can operate very freely as long as it very freely tows the EPRDF line. Now if only the EPRDF can nettle those Scientologist and those Kabbalah-ists, Ethiopia would officially be known as the country less crazy than Eritrea. It used to be “we are better than Mengistu” but these days that’s ringing too close to home. Lucky for Ato Meles, he has another low bar to compare his miserable record to.

Ato Samuel… resign.

Wonq, I swear you just kill me....you are amazing....so articulate and beautiful writing. You got him good.....hope he reads it since he doesn't have any substantial work to do anyways. It would be beneficial for him to sit and read some blogs once in a while if it would help him with his articulation problems. Sammy, did you hear Wonq, please do us a favor and resign instead of embarassing yourself, us and Princeton every time you are engaged with the public.
I say Wonq for president!!!

He speaks like his father, Meles
But Meles dismissed the Ethiopia Democracy and Accountability Act -- still only a bill -- as unjust.
"It is an unfair decision. It is the result of a vendetta... If it was about the human rights situationthey should have looked at Eritrea first,," he said, in reference to Ethiopia's neighbour and arch-foe.

Wonk:
I am surprized you made no comments about the factional struggle within CUD. You could have urged both sides of the conflict to restraint themselves and avoid the cannibalization currently underway within CUD. Instead, after a long absence, you came out to dump on the poor ambassador. In doing so, you are only satisfying yourself, not contributing to the democratization of Ethiopia. It does not take a lot of courage to criticize the the EPDRF in the USA. But it takes a courage to criticize the lunatics in the diaspora. Your silence about the mess tells me you have no courage. So, please save us from the empty potification from your comfort in the US.

With respect to the HR 2003, I would argue that it was ill-timed by the mere fact that Congress was pushed to pass this motion soon after the government released the leaders of the opposition and other 17,000 prisoners. The actions of the supporters of this motion shows that many of the leaders of the diaspora are not interesting in finding a solution to the political impasse in Ethiopia. By snubbing the government's gesture (however belated it is) they have chosen to escalate the political crisis that has engulfed Ethiopia in the past two years. It takes courage to sit down with your enemy and find a way of out an impasse.

If Ethiopians are to get out of the mess they are in, the government and the opposition have to talk to each other. The theatrics around HR 2003 only strengthens the extremists in both the government and the opposition.
And you are only a cheer leader in the unfolding mess.

Reading your blogs is akin to eating donuts. The first one is just delicious; fresh, warm, soft, melts in your mouth and makes you want more. The second donut is still good but doesn’t have quite the same punch. Diminishing return grows with each successive donuts until the idea of one more wants to make you puke. You are loosing relevance as indicated by the number of participants in the comment section (besides the amen corner).

I would like to state, in the interest of full disclosure, that I enjoy eating donuts. I occasionally even go for a day old and a little stale donut in the absence of something better.

You gotta like Anon 9:54 up there! Boy, does he have a way with words! For the benefit of the Dummkopf-amen-corner of wonqville, who might have missed the subtlety of his observations, here’s a cap:

1) He is “surprized.” Yes, the man is “surprized” that wonq did not comment on some intra-party conflict in the same breath as she was talking about, uh, Sammy on HR2003. Surprize-surprize! How could she have missed that?

2) He laments that wonq failed to urge both sides of the conflict to “restraint” themselves. Yes! First, wonq herself should “restraint” herself from empty “potification” as he points out. Next, when she’s done “restrainting” herself, she should tell those warring factions to “restraint” too. If they refuse to heed her call and remain “un-restrainted”, perhaps some ager-wedad could get a “restrainting” order against them. No? Well, just a thought.

3) He complains that many of the leaders of the Diaspora are “not INTERESTING in finding a solution..” Wait a minute! Wait a doggone minute, here! My dear Anon 9:54, you’ve really gone too far with that remark. We in the ET Diaspora may not be INTERESTED, but INTERESTING we ARE indeed!

Now, if y’all excuse me, gotta go make the donuts. Fresh donuts to ship to my friends at Aigafara. From the sound of things, they’ve been serving stale donuts over there again. I would like to state, in the interest of full disclosure, that I can’t deal with all that indigestion. Fara is one thing. A constipated Fara is another. . . .

Let’s not “loose” relevance, Dina!

Our politicians and our journalists are amusing creatures in that one is the other in an instant. An Ethiopian "Journalist" is an Ethiopian "Politician". The boundary is none!
Just look at the activist journalism of ER. For that matter read through the ususal suspects of emigrre' political sites, and you get "Cadre Journalism" supporting this group or condemning that one.
There is no independent media in there any more. come to think of it there was never any. And we do politics, uh?!

Thanks a lot!
This seems to be the only blog tht I can post my remarks and see it published. let me tell you a story:
A certain Dawit Kebede wrote an Amharic article, a polemical article against Taye W/ Semait. Dawit's language was not pleasant at all, and that happened few weeks ago. Then this same Dawit wrote an "Open Letter" just days ago addrresing Hailu Shawil. I was a bit taken by the obvious hypocracy of Dawit for writing such letter AFTER he clearly took a stand against Hailu Shawil. So I sent an e-mail to Dawit's publisher indicating my desire to know who the target audience of Dawit'"Open Letter" are. My e-mail was censored. Again I sent another one complaining the censorship. That one did'nt see the light of day too.
Any way, Thanks for the real Democratic blog, Weichegud, my ideas and inquiries will continue despite the "democratic" censors of Kinijit's cadre's.

Something resembling a police blotter is shown on ER today-Nov. 14, 2007.
In a style ala East German Stasi police ER is using what it calls a "a research unit" to investigate fellow Ethiopians in DC area.
On today's ER blotter the research unit is investigating one Ethiopian who happens to hold different political position than that of ER. The ER unit(read dehninet)is reporting on activities, connections, and family ties of this particular Ethiopian. This is a shocking reminder of Hizb Dehninet of Addis Ababa who knocks on peoples door at night.
So many abuse is being witnessed in DC area among Ethiopians that needs to be reported to the real authorities.

Here I go again.
Things are getting somewhat complicated.I have been focusing on "media" abuses in the diaspora politics and my sole intention was and still is to keep average Ethiopians current and democratic.
For that I have tried to expose some of the radical abuses of ER and one Dawit Kebede.
I did'nt mean to ignore the other side.
For instance, the pictures posted on Ethiolion are in similar catagory. But leaders are fair game! only leaders are fair game! as a result, though not to my taste, those pictures have political feel whatever weight one like to hold them for. Nevertheless, they are pictures of political leaders who are shaping things. What I am saying is that "Cadre Journalism" should know its limit! For example Hailu Shawil is fair game but not me,or not my neighbor or not my friend.
Leave the non leaders, the Joe Public, the average Ethiopians to have whatever views they desire.
Now I am reading allegations, counter allegations and cries for legitmacy.
let thausand ideas mushroom. Keep the idea floating without the harrasment of our citizens, then the people will know, in due time, the good from the bad. probably they already do.

wvczIs any one alive out there?
Well, the ER spy group called "ER Reasearch Unit" has strike again! On its Dec. 18 issue ER reported on the success of Hailu Shawil's business venture. The spy unit with its Google earth photo showing some real estate tried to impress fara Ethiopians with its non-issue rerporting. In the mean time, the ER spy unit failed to report on the success of Birhanu Nega's business.
While ER spy unit is expanding its spying on Ethiopians operation, its other wing in Atlanta is busy contamplating about expanding its propaganda.
The same Dawit Kebede that has been bad mouthing Ethiopians with differing views is now reving his propaganda engine, but his knowledge of media is out there for any one to see.
Dawit wrote a two page article concrerining "Media".
The first paragraph reads as follows:
I am forced to write this after consulting with many people.(my tranlation)
Well Dawit do not want to tell his readers who he was consulting with. Was Dawit consulting his uncle, his brother, his girl friend or people with media background? Dawit did'nt say.
The other question is who/what forced Dawit to write such "Blue Tiger" two pager. When some one is talking about "Blue Tiger" you can take it from me that that person knows nothing about the topic. That goes for Dawit too.
Analyzing the different types of media Dawit says this:(my translation)
Pushing to the side true independent media, and only focusing on those "hizbawi"medias we can liat them as three types.
1- Free media(netsa media)
2- Partially free (bekefil netsa media)
3- Organization media( yederijitoch Media.

There you have Dawit's "Blue Tiger"
The depth of his knowledge on media matters not good.
In the first place why should an Ethiopian reader push aside true independent media? Dawit hate independent things.
Second, what is all that mumbo-jumbo about the three types of media he mentioned? Well, this time Dawit is clear.
On the "free media" he is talking about media outlets like ER, EMF(which Dawit himself is owner).
On the "Bekefil Netsa" media Dawit is talking about those radio stations in different American cities catering to Ethiopian Audience. Dawit is one of the DJs on one of those radios in Atlanta.
In reality what this guy wrote is ala Birhanu Nega. He is talking about himself, he is talking about his web-site, and he is talking about his group.
Funny thing is dawit's two page article ending. I do not want to go that low and end it here

CADRE' JOURNALISM OF THE 3RD GRADE KIND.

How does one feel on reading or attempting to read a poorly writen piece that has no title?
It is the sign of the times that Ethiopian politics is now at the third grade level!
There I was reading an article with no heading on ER and EMF web-sites. It's addressed to Hailu Shawil in the form of the much abused "Open Letter". The manner of the writing reflects a mind of an elementary student.
Let me introduce the article/open letter that was dangling under no heading.
On top of the the first page is an Amharic adadge wit bold letters on the title space. Here it is:
"Yemayadig Hitsan Ayirgemih
Yemaymot Shimagle Aykadih.
Yeap, that is the "heading". Cadre' journalism hits rock bottom!
There is more. Right under that twisted Amharic adadge there is a statement of decalration. It reads:
"After completing this article
I was going to publish it
under my name, but since the
contents reflects the views of
the people. . . I am
presenting it here in the name
of the Ethiopian people.
THE ETHIOPIAN PEOPLE'S VIOCE!

There it was, an article with no title and a personal declaration right under its teisted Amharic teret! Then the whole thing is surounded with bold title enclosure rectangle.
In other words we have no title, no author, and a paragraph as "heading".
It is all third grade from there on.
Can any on write anything in the name of the "Ethiopian People" ?
Where in the world is this possible except in the fara politics of Ethiopians.
What is included in that headless letter? Let me sumerize it.
The writer- I believe it's Dawit Kebede- treats Ethiopian politics through the Ethiopian custom of LEKSO,and other personal grievences.
First Hailu Shawil is accused of failing to attend the funeral of Prof. Assrat Woldeyes. Then there is the personal grievence the writer feels during his encouters with Hailu Shawil.
How is this to be taken ?
If Hailu shawil was not in attendance during the funeral, what does that have to do with anything? Only a Feudal Ethiopian raise it to the level of political discourse.
Well, who else was not in attendance of that funeral? Can we go on like this?
One other grievence is interesting.
It envolves both Hailu Sahwil and the headless Writer. Here it rreads:
Let me remind you one thing...
When you arrive in America on
July and Nehass'e 2005 I was
calling you on your cell phone
and at the hotel to inform you
about the condition back home.
Then it ends with a"proof" of Hailu Shawil's carelessness towrd the fate of Ethiopia.
This is a shameless assertion. It is even rude!
Hailu just left Ethiopia for America, and this third grader thug is calling him to update him on Ethiopia. He was pestering Hailu with "Are you gonna believe me or your lying eyes?"
That briefly is the entire comntent of the third grader cadre posing as a politician.
